A thousand years of stone

Tower of London

The fortress that has guarded Wapping's western edge since William the Conqueror.

The White Tower, raised by William the Conqueror around 1078, is the oldest building anyone in Wapping has ever lived next door to. Royal palace, prison, mint, menagerie, jewel-house — the Tower has been all of these.

Walk west along the Thames Path from Wapping High Street and within ten minutes the moat opens beside you, the Crown Jewels glittering in their vault and the ravens still presiding over the green.
